Bosch vs Samsung dishwashers

Rodney Penas
Owner / Lead Technician · 13+ years repairing appliances on Long Island

Two of the most common dishwashers I service on Long Island are Bosch and Samsung. Customers ask me which to buy all the time. Here's the honest comparison after 13+ years of seeing both inside and out.

Reliability: not close

Bosch wins this clearly. Bosch dishwashers from the 800/500/300 series routinely last 12-18 years with minor maintenance. The European-style design — water-cooled motor, stainless interior, single circulation pump — has fewer failure points than what Samsung does.

Samsung dishwashers, in my service notes, average 6-9 years before a major repair. Their stainless rack glides corrode in hard-water Long Island, and the control boards fail more frequently than Bosch.

Repair cost when something does fail

Bosch parts are pricier (often 30-50% more than Samsung) but each repair is usually the LAST thing wrong with the unit for a long time. Samsung parts are cheaper but you tend to do 2-3 repairs in close succession.

Common Bosch failures we see:

  • E15 anti-flood error (pan leak, ~$200-400 to fix)
  • Drain pump (~$250-350)
  • Door latch (~$180-250)

Common Samsung failures we see:

  • Control board (~$300-450)
  • Drain pump (~$200-300)
  • Door spring/cord (~$150-250)
  • Wash motor (~$300-400)

Quietness

Bosch is dramatically quieter. The 800 series at 39-42 dBA is one of the quietest residential dishwashers made. Samsung's high-end models (Linear Wash, etc.) get to 44-46 dBA which is still quiet, but you'll hear it.

Why this matters in real life: open kitchens. If your kitchen flows into a TV room or eating area, the Bosch is noticeably less intrusive.

Drying performance

This one's funny. Bosch uses condensation drying (no heated dry element) which works great with rinse aid but can leave plastic items wet. Samsung uses heated dry which dries plastics better but uses more energy.

If you load a lot of plastic Tupperware, Samsung might frustrate you less. If you mostly run dishes/glasses, Bosch dries them spotless with rinse aid.

My recommendation

If reliability and longevity matter most, Bosch. Buy the 500 or 800 series. Skip the 100/300 — those are entry-level and more failure-prone. The premium pays back in 5+ extra years of life.

If you want feature-rich (third rack, AutoOpen door, app integration) and don't mind a 7-9 year life, Samsung is fine.

Either way, when something does break, we cover both. See our dishwasher repair page for what to expect.

FAQ

Frequently asked

The questions Long Island customers ask about this most often.

Which is more reliable: Bosch or Samsung dishwashers?

Bosch wins reliability hands-down — typical lifespan 15-20 years vs. Samsung's 8-12. Samsung has better Wi-Fi features and lower upfront cost; Bosch has quieter operation, better drying, and far fewer service calls.

Are Bosch dishwashers worth the higher price?

On Long Island, yes — especially for the 800-series and above. Hard water shortens dishwasher life across all brands, and Bosch's stainless tub + better water management handles it better. The 5-7 extra years of life justifies the premium.

What goes wrong with Samsung dishwashers most often?

The drain pump (year 4-6), the door latch sensor, and the control board. Repairs are doable but Samsung parts can take 3-5 days to arrive from authorized parts houses, vs. Bosch parts which we usually carry on the truck.

Should I repair my old Samsung dishwasher or buy a Bosch?

If your Samsung is 8+ years old with a major failure, I'd lean toward replacing — and Bosch is the upgrade I'd recommend. If your Samsung is under 6 years and the repair is a drain pump or door latch, fix it.

Do Bosch dishwashers really not need a heated dry cycle?

Correct — Bosch uses condensation drying with a stainless tub. It works well for most loads if you remove dishes within 30 minutes of cycle end. Plastic items at the top still need a towel-dry sometimes. Most customers prefer it once they get used to it.
