Dishwasher problem
Dishwasher Won't Drain? Standing Water in the Tub.
Standing water at the bottom of your dishwasher means the drain cycle isn't completing. The fix is usually one of three places: the disposal connection, the drain hose, or the pump itself.
Common causes
What's actually wrong
Disposal not run / clogged
Most dishwashers drain through the disposal. If you didn't run the disposal recently or there's debris in it, the drain backs up.
Drain hose clogged or kinked
Hose between the dishwasher and the disposal can clog with grease and debris.
Drain pump failed
Pump motor or impeller issue. Quick swap once diagnosed.
High loop / air gap blocked
If your installation uses a high loop or air gap, debris can clog it.
Check valve in pump housing
Some pumps have a check valve that gets stuck.
Before you call
Quick checks you can do
- Run the disposal first. Sometimes the obvious fix.
- Disconnect the drain hose at the disposal and check for visible clog.
- Pull the unit out (if accessible) and inspect the hose for kinks.
When to call us
Pump replacements are 1-hour jobs. We carry common Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, and GE drain pumps on the truck.
