Ice Maker Not Working? The Five Most Common Causes.
Ice makers are mechanical assemblies with a dozen ways to fail. Samsung side-by-sides and LG French doors are the most repair-needy on Long Island. Once we know the brand and model, we usually know the culprit before opening the door.
What's actually wrong
Notorious on Samsung side-by-side fridges. The fill tube ices over and the entire assembly locks up. Replacement with the updated part fixes it.
Solenoid that opens to fill the icemaker. When it fails, no water gets in and you get small or no ice cubes.
Sometimes the obvious — a filter that's overdue can restrict water flow enough to stop ice production. Easy to test by bypassing the filter.
Side-by-side fridges from Whirlpool and GE Profile use optics boards to detect ice level. They fail commonly around year 5-7.
The motor/timer assembly can fail. Replacement is a 20-minute job once diagnosed.
Quick checks you can do
- Check the icemaker on/off arm — make sure it's down (on position).
- Replace the water filter if it's been more than 6 months. Cheapest first step.
- Look at the fill tube at the back of the freezer — if it's iced over, that's your problem and it's a Samsung pattern.
- Check the freezer temperature — should be 0-5°F. Above that and the icemaker won't cycle.
Once you've checked the filter and confirmed the freezer is cold, call us. Diagnosis of which specific part failed (module, valve, optics) takes 10 minutes with a multimeter — we'll know before quoting parts.
