Stove / Range problem
Stove Burner Won't Light or Heat? Gas vs. Electric Diagnosis.
Burner problems split clearly. Gas burners that won't light = igniter, spark module, or burner head clogged. Electric burners that won't heat = element, infinite switch, or coil receptacle.
Common causes
What's actually wrong
Gas: clogged burner head
Most common gas issue. Spilled food clogs the burner ports. Cleaning fixes it.
Gas: spark module / igniter
If you hear no clicking when you turn the knob, the spark module has failed.
Gas: surface igniter (sealed burners)
Some gas ranges use glow-bar igniters at each burner — they fail individually.
Electric: burner coil
Open circuit. Element burned through. Easy swap.
Electric: infinite switch
Switch that controls power to the coil. Fails over time.
Electric: coil receptacle
Where the coil plugs in. Burns or corrodes — coil can't get power.
Before you call
Quick checks you can do
- Gas: try cleaning the burner head with a paperclip in the spark hole and a brush.
- Gas: turn each burner one at a time and listen for clicking. Silence = spark module.
- Electric: swap a working coil into the bad position. If it works, the problem is the coil. If not, it's the switch or receptacle.
