Bosch Built-In Dishwasher: Tension Cords + Door Hinge

Appliance: Bosch built-in dishwasher Location: Hauppauge, NY

Bosch built-in dishwashers use a tension-cord-and-spring system to give the door that smooth, controlled drop. When the cords snap — and they do, usually around year 5-8 — the door slams open and won't close right. It's a quick fix if you have the right parts on the truck.

1. The problem
  • ·Customer in Hauppauge reported the dishwasher door slamming open and refusing to latch correctly.
  • ·Dishwasher was a Bosch 800-series, about 7 years old.
  • ·One side of the door was hanging lower than the other — classic asymmetric tension cord failure.
2. Diagnosis
  • ·Inspected both door springs through the access panel at the base of the unit.
  • ·Confirmed left-side cord had snapped at the spring attachment point. Right-side cord was stretched and within months of failing too.
  • ·Door hinge bushings were also worn — a common companion failure on Bosch built-ins.
3. The fix
  • ·Replaced both door springs and tension cords with the updated Bosch part (always do them in pairs, never one at a time).
  • ·Replaced the door hinge bushings while the panel was off.
  • ·Re-leveled the dishwasher in the cabinet (these need to be perfectly level for the door system to work right).
  • ·Tested 10 open/close cycles — door now drops smoothly and latches firmly.
Tip from Rodney

If your Bosch dishwasher door is starting to feel heavy or slamming open, the tension cords are about to go. Don't wait — when one snaps, the other follows within months. Always replace both at the same time.
