Samsung Side-by-Side: Ice Maker, Compressor & Defrost Service
Appliance: Samsung side-by-side refrigerator
Location: Long Island, NY

A Samsung side-by-side that wasn't making ice and had warm spots in the fridge compartment is one of the most common calls we get on Long Island. This job had three issues stacked: an icemaker assembly that had frozen solid, a partially failed defrost system causing frost build-up, and a compressor running constantly trying to compensate.
1. The problem
- ·Customer reported no ice production for ~3 weeks and food spoiling in the upper fridge.
- ·Frost build-up was visible on the back wall of the freezer — the defrost system was failing.
- ·The compressor was running 90%+ of the time. That's the unit fighting itself, not actually cooling efficiently.
- ·Notorious icemaker design on Samsung RF-series — well-documented failure pattern.
2. Diagnosis
- ·Pulled the icemaker assembly. The optics sensor was iced over and the ejector arm was locked.
- ·Tested the defrost heater with a multimeter — open circuit. That's the cause of the frost.
- ·Verified the evaporator fan was still running. Compressor amperage was high but within spec — meaning the compressor wasn't bad yet, just overworked.
- ·Confirmed the diagnosis matched a known Samsung pattern: defrost failure → frost build-up → restricted airflow → warm fridge compartment → compressor never cycles off.
3. The fix
- ·Replaced the icemaker assembly with the updated Samsung part (the redesigned version handles freeze-up better).
- ·Replaced the defrost heater and verified the defrost timer was cycling correctly.
- ·Manually defrosted the evaporator coil and cleared the drain line.
- ·Tested cooling with a thermometer in the fridge and freezer for a full cycle. Both came down to spec within 90 minutes.
- ·Total time on-site: about 2 hours. Customer had ice the next morning.
Tip from Rodney
If your Samsung side-by-side has frost on the back wall of the freezer or the fridge compartment is uneven, don't ignore it. The compressor is the expensive part — it gets killed by a $40 defrost heater that nobody replaced. Call us before that happens.
