Dryer problem
Dryer Shutting Off Mid-Cycle? It's Almost Always the Vent.
When a dryer shuts off mid-cycle and won't restart for 30 minutes, the thermal fuse is doing its job — protecting your house from a fire. The fuse trips because the vent is restricted and the unit overheats. The fix isn't just replacing the fuse — it's clearing the vent.
Common causes
What's actually wrong
Thermal fuse tripped — vent clogged
The most common cause. Vent restriction → unit overheats → thermal fuse opens → dryer shuts off until cool.
Failed motor capacitor
Some dryers shut off when the motor capacitor weakens. Easier diagnosis.
Cycling thermostat failure
Less common — thermostat opens prematurely and cuts power to the heater.
Door switch failing intermittently
Vibration causes a worn door switch to register 'open' mid-cycle, shutting the unit off.
Before you call
Quick checks you can do
- Pull the dryer out and feel the cabinet — if it's very hot, the vent is restricted.
- Inspect the wall vent and exterior cap.
- Don't just replace the thermal fuse without clearing the vent. The fuse will trip again.
When to call us
We do thermal fuse replacement AND full vent service together — they're the same call. Fixing only the fuse is a waste of money.
