Dryer Takes Forever to Dry? It's the Vent.
If your dryer takes 90 minutes to dry what used to take 45 — and you've cleaned the lint screen — the vent is restricted. This is the #1 hidden cause of dryer fires and the most common 'slow drying' issue we see on Long Island.
What's actually wrong
Lint accumulates in the duct between the dryer and the exterior wall cap. Most homes need a vent cleaning every 1-2 years.
The flexible hose between the dryer and the wall can collapse or kink. Often happens when the dryer gets pushed back.
Long Island homes are notorious for this. Birds build nests in the louvered cap. We've pulled out full nests blocking 100% of airflow.
Manufacturer specs call for under 25 feet of total run. Longer runs need a booster fan.
Beyond the lint screen, lint accumulates inside the housing. Disassemble and clean every couple years.
Quick checks you can do
- Disconnect the transition hose and run the dryer for 30 seconds. If it suddenly dries faster, the wall vent is the problem.
- Feel the dryer cabinet during a cycle. If it's hot to the touch on the outside, the vent is restricted.
- Check the exterior cap — flap should open during operation. Push it open and look for nest debris.
If your dryer is hot to the touch, taking forever, or shutting off mid-cycle — that's a fire risk. Don't ignore it. We do full vent cleaning and re-routing on Long Island.
