Dryer problem
Dryer Won't Tumble? Belt, Motor, or Door Switch.
If your dryer hums but the drum doesn't move, or it doesn't even hum, the problem is mechanical. Three parts cover almost every case — and the diagnosis is fast.
Common causes
What's actually wrong
Broken drive belt
Most common cause. Belt snaps after years of stretching. Drum spins by hand freely with no resistance.
Worn drum support rollers
Rollers seize, drum can't turn. Often comes with a thumping or squealing noise before complete failure.
Idler pulley failure
Tensioner that keeps the belt tight. When it seizes, belt slips off.
Door switch
If the dryer thinks the door is open, it won't run at all. Common failure on aging units.
Motor
Less common — motor failure usually comes with a humming sound that gets quiet.
Before you call
Quick checks you can do
- Open the door and try to spin the drum by hand. Spins freely with no resistance = belt is broken or off the pulley. Drum won't spin = roller or motor seized.
- Listen — total silence = electrical or door switch. Humming = motor running but something mechanical isn't.
- Check the door switch by pushing the door closed and listening for a click.
When to call us
Belt replacement is straightforward but requires partial disassembly. We carry common Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, and Maytag belts on the truck.
