Microwave problem
Microwave Door Won't Close or Latch? Switches Are the Cause.
Microwave doors have multiple interlock switches and a mechanical latch. When one fails, the microwave either won't run, won't heat, or shuts off mid-cycle. Diagnosis is fast.
Common causes
What's actually wrong
Primary door switch
Most common. The main interlock fails — microwave won't start at all.
Secondary / monitor switch
Safety backup. Failure can cause the unit to fail mid-cycle.
Door latch hooks broken
Plastic latch hooks can break. Door physically won't latch.
Door alignment
Hinge wear over time misaligns the door so the switches don't engage properly.
Before you call
Quick checks you can do
- Open and close the door slowly. Listen for the latch click.
- Look at the latch hooks for visible damage.
When to call us
Switches are cheap. We carry common Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, and LG door switches on the truck.
