Microwave Runs But Doesn't Heat? Magnetron, Diode, or Door Switch.
A microwave that runs but doesn't heat is almost always one of three parts: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, or the door interlock switch. WARNING: microwaves contain high-voltage capacitors that can hold lethal charge even unplugged. Don't open the case yourself.
What's actually wrong
The tube that produces microwave radiation. When it fails, microwave runs but doesn't cook. Most common cause.
Fails along with the magnetron typically. Cheap part, replace at the same time.
Microwaves WILL NOT heat unless all door switches signal 'closed.' Safety feature.
HV capacitor can fail — but dangerous to test without proper discharge tools.
Less common. Failure usually comes with a loud humming and burning smell.
Quick checks you can do
- Test by heating a cup of water for 1 minute. If it's still cold, the problem is real (not just the food).
- Check the door — does it close firmly? The latch needs to satisfy multiple switches.
- DO NOT open the case. The HV capacitor can hold 2000+ volts even unplugged.
Magnetron and HV diode replacements need proper discharge procedures. We carry the right tools and know the safety steps.
