Washer Loud or Banging? Front-Load and Top-Load Diagnosis.
Loud washers are usually telling you a part is worn. Front-loaders bang from worn shocks. Top-loaders grind from a dead bearing or a slipping coupler. Both types vibrate from being unlevel.
What's actually wrong
The dampers under the drum wear out around year 7-10. Drum bangs against the cabinet during spin.
Tub bearing failure — common on aging Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool front-loaders. Loud grinding during spin.
Slipping coupler creates intermittent thumping during agitation.
Worn agitator dogs or bushings cause clicking or grinding during wash cycle.
Sometimes the simple fix — washer legs are unlevel. Check before assuming a part failure.
Quick checks you can do
- Push down on each corner of the washer. If any corner moves, level the legs.
- Listen during spin vs. wash — different cycles surface different failures.
- Look for water under the unit during spin — bearing failure often comes with a leak.
Front-load tub bearing replacements are involved repairs and sometimes uneconomical on units over 10 years old — we'll tell you straight whether to fix or replace.
