Washer Won't Spin? Diagnose Top vs. Front Load First.

The diagnosis path for 'won't spin' splits hard between top-load and front-load washers. We always start by asking which one you have — the parts are completely different.

Common causes

What's actually wrong

Top-load: motor coupler

Worn or broken motor coupler is the #1 cause on top-load Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore washers. Cheap part, quick fix.

Top-load: lid switch

If the washer thinks the lid is open, it won't spin. Common failure on aging machines.

Front-load: door lock

If the door isn't locking electronically, the spin cycle won't engage. Door lock assembly is a typical culprit.

Drive belt

Both styles can have drive belt failures — slipped, stretched, or broken.

Out-of-balance load

Modern washers won't spin if the load is wildly unbalanced. Re-distribute and try again before assuming a part failure.

Before you call

Quick checks you can do

  • Re-distribute the load. Heavy items on one side will cause the washer to refuse to spin.
  • Check the lid switch (top-load) — push down on the lid and listen for a click.
  • Front-loader: try locking the door manually and listening for the lock engagement sound.
  • Listen during the spin cycle — humming with no spin = motor or coupler. Silence = electrical issue.
When to call us

Once you've ruled out load balance and lid/door issues, the part diagnosis is fast. Most spin failures are 1-hour repairs.
