Washer Won't Spin? Diagnose Top vs. Front Load First.
The diagnosis path for 'won't spin' splits hard between top-load and front-load washers. We always start by asking which one you have — the parts are completely different.
What's actually wrong
Worn or broken motor coupler is the #1 cause on top-load Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore washers. Cheap part, quick fix.
If the washer thinks the lid is open, it won't spin. Common failure on aging machines.
If the door isn't locking electronically, the spin cycle won't engage. Door lock assembly is a typical culprit.
Both styles can have drive belt failures — slipped, stretched, or broken.
Modern washers won't spin if the load is wildly unbalanced. Re-distribute and try again before assuming a part failure.
Quick checks you can do
- Re-distribute the load. Heavy items on one side will cause the washer to refuse to spin.
- Check the lid switch (top-load) — push down on the lid and listen for a click.
- Front-loader: try locking the door manually and listening for the lock engagement sound.
- Listen during the spin cycle — humming with no spin = motor or coupler. Silence = electrical issue.
Once you've ruled out load balance and lid/door issues, the part diagnosis is fast. Most spin failures are 1-hour repairs.
